This is one of the designers showcased during Mercedes Benz-STYLO Fashion Show night themed Aladdin's Harem Night, Designer of The Year 2009. Honestly, I have never heard of Edric Ong or I may and the name did not stick on my absent-minded memory. However, I am definitely amazed after seeing his collection and shall remember his name all my life InsyaAllah.
It's more of an art show, a portrayal of beautiful hand-woven silky soft fabrics lightly wrapped around the models. Edric Ong is actually a Sarawakian borned architect designer and I quote;
The creative teams of architect-designer Edric Ong and his associates have been pioneering new designs with traditional artists of Sarawak in the area of textiles, basketry, fibers, ceramics, wood and stone. Under the EO label, the focus has been on Eco-textiles: silk; ikat; natural dye; backstrap loom weaving; wood block; hand printed scarvs, stoles and wraps inspired by Sarawakian ethnic designs and motifs. The products are currently sold the Aseana Gallery at Suria KLCC in Kuala Lumpur and the Datai Shop, Langkawi.
And this collection showcased that night was first indeed to be out on public, and I was among the first group of people who are fortunate enough to witness this art display before it will be showcased in Paris. Even the History Channel was there that night to record Edric Ong's collection. Something quite amazing to be part of, I was feeling a lil giddy inside :)
Be amazed too, you;
I love the lil laced hand-woven hats, and of course all the fabrics are hand-made with love with the traditional techniques use in Sarawak. I'm so proud to know that people all around the world can also enjoy the beauty of Malaysia and specifically Sarawak through fashion. A lil sad that I missed my chance to take a photo with the man of the moment. I hesitated if he's the same man when I saw him the next night at the Scarlett Theatre for the Fashion Show Gala Night. Ahh well, I hope there will be a next time
Cheers to Edric Ong! Keep up the great work, make Malaysia proud! ♥
